MELBOURNE.
May 30. — The debate on the want of confidence motion was brought to a close last night, when the Government was defeated by a majority of five. The House adjourned in order to give Ministers time to consider their future action. It is said that they wili ask the Governor to dissolve. Francis wiil probably be the future Premier. In the course of the debate Grant justified the San Francisco route as valuable iv the event of war breaking out. There was a loyal demonstration on the Queen's Birthday. The Stockyard Creek diggings are improving. An attempted outbreak at Pentridge gaol was promptly suppressed. The experiment of utilising prison labor is being tried with a gaDg who are employed levelling the ground on the waste lands. Arrived. — Lochiel. Sailed. — Rita for New Zealand ports. Tookey's are wauted afc £6. Breadstuffs unchanged. Flour £16. Wheat 6s. d. to 7s. Oats slightly firmer ; good are selling at 3s. 3d. Sugar market improving.
