TOLL GATES.
To the Editor of, the Nklsgn Evening- Mail. Sir, — Tn the late discussiou on exempting clergymen and Government officials from paytng toll dues (a custom universally prevailing), I regret that no one took the principle of objecting altogether to the existence of *< the solitary toll gate " on the Waimea Road. If arguments sufficient can be adduced for the abolition of toll gates where they have been established throughout districts, does it uot appear unwise to. commence a course generally obnoxious, as an expensive form ef collecting : road rates. : How many years has our solitary gate existed without persuading, other districts to follow the example ? Yours, &c, . A Ratepayer.
