To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir, —"Though vanquished he could argue still" seems to be a qualification of some persons in a higher position than a country schoolmaster. In reply to Mr. Curtis's assertion that the £12,000 had for all practical purposes no existence except in my imagination, I sent you a letter from the Bank Manager showing that not only was the £12,000 quite unencumbered by any overdraft at the time I left office, but there was also a balance of £4,185 6s. 9d. in addition. I thought this would have proved tho £12,000 to have been at least a substantial reality, aud have silenced even Mr. Curtis; but no, Mr. Curtis sends you various statements of what tbe overdrafts have been since I resigned all control over them, as if that could possibly alter the fact that I left it there, and left a good balance besides. In the same way, although we have Mr. Curtis's own speech to .the Council, advising:, the' Council not to get out of debt, and his correspondence with Mr. Stafford refusing to lake his good advice as to the true interests of Nelson, in keeping out of the partnership with heavily-indebted provinces, Mr. Curtis now tells us that he did all he could for Nelson in the matter, "by successfully opposing and preventing any such partnership." I am, &c, Alfred Saundees. v Nelson, May 25.
