The Nelson Evening Mail THURSDAY, MAT 23, 1872.

To-Mobbow being a public holiday,, the Evening Mail wilL be published at noon. All advertisements must be sent in not later than 11 o'clock. The steamer City of Melbourne, which left Sydney for Auckland on the 9tb inst., had not arrived at the latter port on the 21st. She had on board a portion of the Suez mail, the Australian- Californian mails, 48 through passengers to San Francisco, 18 for Auckland, and a large cargo, Caution. — We wish to call attention to the following clause of the " Towns Improvement Bill," which has recently been passed by the Provincial Council and assented to by the Superintendent ; — "lf any person shall light any, fire, or throw any lighted match or other lighted substance in any street or road, such person shall for every such offence be liable to a penaity not exceeding forty shillings." Bazaar and Art Union.— The Managing Committee of the bazaar and Art Union which are to be held at St. Mary's, Nelson, have received from France information that articles that had been ordered — but the despatch of which was delayed on account of the war — have at last been shipped ; four large cases having been put on board a vessel which was to leave London on the 20th February last. As soon as these goods arrive, public notice will be given of the time when the above will take place, and in the meantime the disposing of tickets will be continued. Children's Treat.— Mr. Crisp, with bis usual thoughtfulness, is preparing to give the little ones of the town their annual Queen's birthday treat to-morrow, when, after parading the principal streets in procession, they are., first, to have the opportunity of "regaling themselves with tea, cake, buns, and bread and butter in profusion," and then to adjourn to a paddock lent by Mr. Warren for the occasion, where games of every description will be provided for them. A public meeting at the Temperance Hall, at which Mr. Saunders will take the chair, will bring the day's proceedings to a close.
