English Mail. — A private telegram ' t-tates that the American steamer was signalled at Aucklaud this afternoon. Provincial Council. — The Council was engaged for four hours last night upon the Estimates, in which considerable progress was made, nearly all the items passing without any material alteration. A protest was entered against them by Mr. Kynuersley and the other West Coast members, on the ground that the goldfields did not obtain their fair share of the revenue. ■ Mr. Saunders's LECTURE.—The Temperance Hall was crowded in every part last night, when Mr. Saunders delivered his lecture on " The External an ! Visible Indications of Character." The lecture was illustrated by diagrams and portraits, and contained some amusing allusions to . a few of the leading men of New Zealand. At its close a hearty vote cf thanks was accorded to Mr. Saunders, and to the chairman, Mr, Joseph Mackay.
