— o To the Editor op the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir— lt is highly gratifying to find that the Examiner now so strenuously advocates the principles of economy, for the advocacy of which the Colonist was started, and which it so sturdily maintained till within a few years. And just as highly mortifying is it to see that the Colonist (ignoring the means, principally by public subscription, by which and the purposes for which it was established)now labors so hardly to find excuses for every administrative extravagance — Provincial or' General. Will the public be cajoled into voting for a shoddy politician, when they can have the genuine article ? Tours, &c, Consistency. For remainder of news see fourth page.
The cod liver oil made at Port Chalmers has been pronounced excellent in all the required qualities by the Medical Society of Victoria. * Extensive Plans for the irrigation of the Canterbury Plains have been laid before the council of that province, j A Southern Paper says :-— ■' St. George's Day was religiously observed by the Lawrence Banks ; " but unfortunately it gives no information as to the religious rites observed on the occasion.
