MELBOURNE.
May 2. — The Parliament met on the 30th April. Parties are fairly divided, and the Opposition proposed an amendment to the] reply to the Governor's speech on the ground that uo reference was made to the important subject of public instruction. The debate is still proceediog. Great anxiety is felt with reference to the Magnet from Greymoutb. It is reported that the King Oscar saw a vessel bottom upwards, and also some pieces of wreck. Casley introduces a Permissive Bill. The Governor's speech proposes to grant subsidies to the postal service via San Francisco and New Zealand, also by the Cape and Ceylon. j Tookey's sold at £7, and are wanted at ! £6 15s. Flour firm at £16. Wheat is slightly easier and has been auctioned at 6s. 6d. to 6s. Bd. Sugars unaltered. Good feeding oats, 3a. Arrived: Northern Light, from Westport; Posperity, from Hokitika ; Eleanor, from Greymouth. Sailed : Hector, for Napier.
