WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 1872.

Tobiorkow being a public holiday, there will be no publication of the Evening Mail. The Estimates were laid on the table of the Council last night. The revenue for the current year is computed at £85,000 from all sources. Public Meeting. — A meeting of ratepayers will be held at the Temperance Hall, on Friday evening, for the purpose of discussing the propriety of recommending the purchase of the Dun Mountain Company's property. Mr Bromley's Benefit. — Mr Bromley, assisted by a number of gentlemen amateurs, will give an entertainment at the Oddfellows' Hall on Friday evening, the programme of which comprises several new characters never before acted ia Nelson. Among these, Mr. O'Brien, the celebrated "Salamander Sam," will appear as the "Little Butterfly." The entertainment promises to be a highly attractive one. HL The Ocean Bird.— Just after we went to press yesterday the cash-box, of which so much has been said, was discovered in the cabin of this ill-fated schooner, and on being opened was found to contain £50 ss. Id., nearly the whole of it being in Union Bank notes. No blankets were found, and, as the boat is missing, it is quite possible that the crew succeeded in snaking their escape, but whether they contrived to reach the land is uncertain We fully agree with our morning contemporary in his suggestion that a boat should be despatched to search the inhospitable shores of Stephen's Island, on which it is quite within the bounds of possibility that the unfortunate men may have taken refuge. The Thanksgiving- Bay.— The clergy and ministers of religion of all denominations are about to offer a willing response to the invitation of the Govern or to observe to-morrow as a day of special thanksgiving for the recovery of the Prince of Wales, as in every church and place of worship it is proposed to bold morning prayer. In Christ Church, at half-past ten, there will be a special choral service conducted by the Bishop of Nelson, assisted by the combined choirs of Christ Church and All Saints, and a brief address will be delivered by the Rev. R. J. Thorpe. In the Wesleyan Church there will be a special morning service, in which the TeZtewmwillbeßung; in the Presbyterian Church the service is to take place in the evening ; there will also be prayers at the Baptist Chapel; and at St. Mary's, during the ordinary Mass for Ascension Day, a Te Deu?n will be sung. In the Synagogue service will be held at 10 o'clock. IL* The LsrANGAHUA. — A correspondent of the Charleston Herald writes from Reefton as follows : — " How some of- the speculators manage to live beats me out of time. Beggars that have not a cent, do a considerable loaf, and hold four, five, or six interests, upon which they could not raise a pound if it were to save them from being hung. There is no business doing i in scrip; the market is full and no buyers; yet scores of seedy-looking individuals go about talking of their interests — in thousands. The great mania for stands and buildings is gradually subsiding, and the people are again recovering their senses. It sounds well at a distance — 120 pair of sawyers and can't get timber. As for carpenters, they are in Socks; I should think there are at least from 250 to 800 here. The report about 30s. a day is false, and you can tell C. so. There are jobs taken here that will not pay ss. a day, and his is one of them. A fair price for one company's work that I know of would have been £320, but one party took it for £140, and even after giving it up the next tenderer would not continue it at £260.
