City Election. — A telegram has been received from Mr. Alfred Saunders to the effect that he is coming to Nelson by the Albion, due on Wednesday next.

American Minstbels. — This talented company will give their second entertainment at the Oddfellows' Hall this evening, when, it is to be hoped, they will be more fortunate in the weather than on the previous evenings.

From returns issued from the registrargeneral's office, Sydney, we learn that ihe estimated population of New South Wales on the 31st December, 1871, was 519,163. The population, according to the census taken on the 2nd April, 1871, was 503,981, showing that there has been an increase during the last three-quarters of the year of 15,182 souls. Analysing the returns, it is found that the increase of births over deaths has added 10,342 to the population, while the arrivals by sea have numbered 4,840 more than the departures.

At Tauranga, Auckland, the Maoris are growing large quantities of wheat ; the Pakehas none, scarcely.

A Bazaar and Gift Auction in aid of the New Catholic schools was recently held at Blenheim, and realised the sum of £180.
