THE ENGLISH MAIL
The following telegrnms have passed between his Honor the Superintendent and the Colonial Secretary on the subject of the conveyance of the mails direct from Manukau to Wellington : — To the Colonial Secretary, Wellington. The Wellington having failed to coll here with two months' English Mails, caused much inconvenience to Nelson Merchants, as presuming them to arrive by Phoebe, on Sunday afternoon, there will be little, if any, time for replies by outgoing mnil on Monday. I shall be glad if you will telegraph explanation for public, satisfaction. Ports on the West Coast will also suffer, as they -\\ouM have at least had an opportunity to telegraph replies via Wellington or Auckland. Oswald Curtis, Superintendent. To his Honor the Supkrintendent, Kelson. Government Buildings, Wellington, April 12, 2 p.m. I ara much obliged to you for giving me the opportunity for explanation about the English mail. When Nevada was found unable to proceed from Auckland, the agents for the contractors were of course obliged to arrange for supplying her coastal service, they have thus not provided for Taranaki, Nelson f °nnd Picton. The long de'ay in the arrival of the Nevada at Auckland, prevented the Government from having a mail steamer at Manukau for these ports. The Government will try to arrange for the detention of the Phoebe at Nelson from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday evening, in order to convey Nelson replies to letters. The West Coast mails will reach Ilokidka from Chris tchurch on Sunday iifternoon, and the return mail will leave Hokitika on Monday, at noon. If Icm arrange for the detention of the Phoebe I will let you know. You can use this tdegram for public information.
