CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The monthly meeting of the Board was held yesterday, when Mr. Barnicoat was unanimously elected Chairman in the place of Captaiu Rough, resigned. The Secretary, reported that Mr. Burn and himself had examined the proposed new site of Pangatotara school-house, and that it was not liable to floods, but occasionally cut off from the lower part of the district, which in eome cases would preveut scholars from attending. It was also near the river, only thirty feet distant. The Board, on the motion of Mr. Luckie, unanimously resolved that it is inexpedient to remove Pangatotara schoolj house from its present site. On the motion of Mr. Broad it was resolved : — "That all future conveyances of land to the Central Board shall be made uuder the provisions of the Land Transfer Acts of 1870 and 1871, and that all lands now belonging to the Board be forthwith placed under the operations of the said Acts." Mr. Simmons moved : — (1) "That it is expedient that provisions be made to exclude from the Provincial Scholarships boys whose parents reside within such a reasonable distance of the College tbat they aie able to attend as day scholars." (2) <• That ifc is desirable tbat a report be token of the progress of the Provincial scholars, and that ifc be competent to dismiss any scholar who has failed to make adequate progress ; and in such case it be aleo competent to transfer the said scholarships so as to extend the term of the more deserviog scholars." Some discussion ensued, and the objection was raised that, as the vote for the scholarships was made by the Provincial Council, it was beyond the power of the Board to make any alteration in the conditions attached to it. Eventually, it was agreed on the motion of the Bishop op Nelson - that a sub-committee be appointed to consider the working of the scholarships offered to the Provincial schools, especially, with reference to the motions of Mr. Simmone, such committee to consist of Messrs. Simmonß, Richmond, Luckie. Barnicoat, Burn, and the mover; to report at next meeting of the Board. It was resolved on tbe motion of Mr. Simmons : — " That from Ist July next, there shall be 212 school days in the year, and that the total attendance for each quarter be divided by 53, in order to determine the average attendance for the quarter." Oa the motion of Mr. Broad, it was I resolved that the same aid be granted to Mr. Niven's school at ReeftOD, as is given to other subsidised schools on the West Coast (£l2 10s. per quarter), subject to the approval of the Inspector, and the rules of the Board." | On the motion of Mr. Burn, it was agreed tbat Mr. James Robson, jun., be appointed pupil teacher at Lower Moutere, at a salary of £26 for the first year, the appointment to date from Ist April current. Some formal business having been disposed of, the Board adjourned until Thursday, May 2.
