The Nelson Evening Mail TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 1872.

Queen Charlotte Sound Goldmining Company. — We learn tbat two ninety-sixth shares in this Company have recently beea disposed of for £25 each. Assembly Rooms. — Miss Stephenson's benefit was the occasion of attracting a far better house than any of the previous performances by this Company, and the entertainment passed off very successfully. Nelson School Society. — The anniversary of this Society will be celebrated at , the Bridge-street Schoolroom this evening by a tea-meetingr, to be followed by a public meeting, when addresses will be delivered by several gentlemen interested in the work of the Society. j San Francisco Mail Service. — The steamer Star of the South arrived at Napier from Auckland on Thursday last, bringing news that the amount of ihe subsidy that the Victorian Government has agreed to contribute towards the San Francisco Mail Service is £25,000, the main condition being that Melbourne shali be the terminus. Coal on the West Coast. — A telegram in the Evening JPosl of Thursday last, says : — The p.s. Result has returned from a place called Ngakawaho, 15 miles from Westport, with a cargo of coal of the finest quality, which can be obtained there at ss. a ton, free on board. No railway is wanted, aa the coal is close to the river bank, and coasters can load from the pit mouth. Easter Monday Sports. — The sports adveriised by Mr. Drake to take place in the Botanical Gardens yesterday, were a complete failure, not owing to any want of energy on the part of the promoter, but to the fact that there was scarcely anyone on the ground Two races took place, the first of which was won by Stanton against four others, the second being carried off by Drake who gave a start of 15 yards to three others in a distance of 200 yards. The whole proceedings must have entailed a heavy pecuniary loss on Mr. Drake. All Fool's Day. — A correspondent has forwarded us the following lines which he entitles " Consolatory reflection for yesterday's victims." They are accompanied by a letter in which he says : — " The general applicability of ihe enclosed lines is patent to all. Does it beseem your editorial discrimen to give them a corner ? If so, please insert for seasonable consolation to the numerous victims, and your far more numerous readers." : — Philosophers subscribe the rule "Ev'ry man's, more or less, a fool," — This truth his faults and follies prove, Greed, envy, lust, ambition, love, — Admitting this to be the rule Bleat's he who's but an April fool ! The San Francisco Mail. — A very probable reason for the non-arrival of this mail is given by the Auckland Herald of Saturday last, which says : — " The steamship Nevada, from Honolulu, with the double English mail, will be due either late to-night or duriug to-morrow. She left Auckland at 2 a.m. on the 26th ult., and will consequently be 34 days away at 2 a.m. to-morrow. Giving her 16 days each way, and a stoppage of two days at Honolulu to coal, &c, she should be back in Auckland to-morrow, but it is possible that she may not arrive before Monday." Up to the time of our going to press there were no tidiogs of her having arrived at Auckland.
