The Assassination of Loed Mayo. Calcutta, February 20.—> On the evening of the Bth February, the Viceroy, Lord Mayo, after in- I
specting convicts on tbe settlement at Port Blair, on Andaman Island, was about to embark in the launch and proceed to the ship Glas'gdw, when in the darkness an nssassin broke through the euard and stabbed him twice in the back. The Viceroy fell or jumped into the water and was pickedup dead before reaching the ship. He never spoke intelligibly. Tbe assassin is named Shere Aii, and was under sentence for life for murder. He had a ticket of leave for good behaviour. I ord Napier has lefc Ceylon for Calcutta as acting Viceroy. The only reason tbe assassin gave was, that God had ordered him to kill the enemy to his country, and, when sentenced to death, he appeared triumphant. Five steamers are offering a first-class passage through the Suez Canal for £36 to London.
