The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 1872.

Resident Magistrate's Court. — Two men, named Bernard Henry and Oliver Johnson, were this morning charged with drunkenness, and were fined 10s. each and costs. Public-houses at Gretmouth — Inspector Hickson, of Greymoutb, at a late Licensing Court, said that he thought it would be much better for the town if one half of the public houses were shut up. Melbourne ajjd the Sufferers by the Geeymouth Flood. — By the Grey River Argus we see that £300 was subscribed towards the relief of the sufferers by the Greymouth flood. It was brought to that port by the s s. Claud Hamilton, on Wednesday last. Sabbath School Tea Meeting at Richmond. — A public tea meeting; in behalf of the Wesleyan Sabbath School, Richmond, is to lake place this evening, after which there is to be a public meeting, when several ministers and friends will give addresses. Licensing Meeting. — The Magistrates present at the meeting were Alexander ; Mackay, Esq., and D. M. Luckie, Esq. j Applications were received from George Potter (by his wife) (o transfer the license of the Coach and Horses, Bridge-street, from George Potler to James M'Conkey. Application granted. The application of James M'Conkey to transfer the license of the Post Boy, Vanguard-street, to George Potter was also granted. Mushroom s. — A question very frequently asked and not easily answered within the last few days has been, Where are there any mushrooms ? For the especial information of those whose delight is in a nice steak, kidney, or chop, with a few choice boiled mushrooms, or an equally delicious stew, we may say that in the neighborhood of Stoke almost any required quantity may now be obtained. In fact we have heard of certain gentlemen who this morning gathered so many that they left the small paddock with regret, not that tbere were no more, but that their baskets were so full and that if they gathered they could not take more away. Representation of the City. — And so we presume we may at last look upon the question as settled that Mr. M. Lightband does intend to retire from the representation of Nelson City io the House of Representatives- This day's Colonist says: "Mr. Lightband, one of the members of the House of Representatives for the City intends going home to England by the April mail, via San Francisco, and, as this will necessitate his absence from the House during the coming session, we understand it is his intention to resign his seat prior to his departure." We suggested some time since that Mr. Lightband ought to call a meeting of his constituents; this he has not done, and it is to be regretted; however, Nelson City must now face the fact that a vacancy will occur, and we hope the electors will determine on sending its best man to further our interests in the House. Telegraphic. — Wellington, March 18. — Reports from the quarantine ground state that 16 people, more or less, are infected with smallpox. — The Melbourne Age of the 4th March, states that Mr. Vogel, on behalf of the Government, purchased the exclusive right of publishing the Argus telegrams in New Zealand, with a view of resuming a supply of Government Summaries of English News to the Press. — The Government has no official knowledge on the subject, and Mr. Vogel's correspondence contains nothing confirming the Age's statement. The Evening Post says if Mr. Vogel has made such a contract, the only course open to the Cabinet, is to repudiate the arrangement in toto, particularly after their authoritive denial of any intention to euter into such a contract. — Colonist. Gas extension is being vigorously proceeded with in Dunedin. ..The Wanganui Herald, of the 13th inst., gives the following account of the accident to the Rev. Mr. -Taylor :—lntelligence was received in town this morning of a serious" trap accident near c Tuiakina

on Tuesday afternoon. Upon enquiry we have been informed that the Rev. B. K. Taylor, with Mrs. Richard Taylor, were proceeding to Marion, and on arriving at the foot of the Turakina hill, the rev. gentleman alighted to give the horse a feed. To, do this he took off the animal's head gear, standing iu front at the time. The horse, when the blinkers were removed, dashed forward, knockiug down Mr. Taylor, and galloped up the hill at a terrific pace, the wheels of the trap passing over the unfortunate gentleman. The mad career of the horse and trap, containing the now terrified lady, came to au abrupt conclusion by a collision with a dray, the occupant being thrown out down the gully. When picked up it found that one shoulder was dislocated, besides many cuts and bruises. Mr Taylor was also severely injured. Both the suffers were taken back to Turakina, and medical assistance sent for. Dr. Tyreman attended, and pronouueed the lady, although badly injured, not to be in a dangerous condition. Mr Taylor is suffering from internal injuries, and lies in a precarious state.
