Charge against an Hospital Surgeon at Melbourne. — An inquiry has been instituted in Melbourne into the conduct of Dr. Bradford who had tortured an epileptic patient by turning a galvanic battery on him while he suffered from a fit. The report states that Dr. Bradford pleaded provocation. A Young Englishman of twenty-two, son of a general in the British army, has come before the Com t of Bankruptcy with a list of debts amounting to a total of £24 000. One of the creditors presents a bill of £353 for cut flowers supplied in the course of six months, and among the items in the bill such entries are to be found as " early lilies of the valley, £10 10s ;" " a moss rose, 10s. 6d." Meat Preserving. — No less than 170,000 sheep, the Bruce Herald says, have been booked for the supply of this season's operations at the N.Z. Meat Preserving Company s factories at Waehdyke (Timaru) and Kakanui. These sheep are to be delivered at the works on dates specified to suit the requirements of the Company, who could preserve a still greater number during the season, and are prepared to buy still more largely, but that this summer's drought has so affected the flocks in the north that the above number represents the whole available supply in the markets for disposal suited for preserving pnrposes. In addition to the above 30,000 sheep and 3000 cattle have already been booked at Woodlands and as the season has just commenced a much larger number is ere long expected to be booked, as the drought has not affected ihe stock in the south to an ex§ nearly so great as that of the north. As 165,000 sheep and 3500 cattle represented this compares entire purchases during 1871, it wi I thus be seen that this year's purchases already exceed last year's total, and as a ready and all but unlimited market now exists in Britain for preserved meats, no dv>ubt a very large increase will be the resul i of this year's operations when completed.
