Hunter Brown, J.P., who had kindly come for the purpose of accompanying his Lordship on the overland route from Nelson, visited the Prospectors' Claim and the Victoria and Weld's " Lookout Tree," and satisfied himself, with the pick in his own hand, of the existence of rich qnartz ia both claims. He reached Westport on Wednesday morning by Peter the Greek's boat, stopping at R. Game's for the night, where there is ample and clean accommodation, and a good example set to many of our " want of accommodation houses." — Westport Times.

Deputations.— On Thursday last, says the West Coast Times, a deputation from the Kanieri district waited upon the Hon. Mr. Reevee, to bring under his notice several matters of interest to the mining population. The deputation consisted of Messrs. Griffiths, Blackburn, Smith, Dick, Watt, Boys, and Brown, and was introduced by Mr. John White, M.H.R. Three questions were brought under the notice of Mr. Reeves; the first being the difficulty arising out of the necessity of rating mining property; the second, the expediency of reducing the gold-duty ; and the third, that a miner's right taken out in one part of the colony should be available in all its districts. Mr. Reeves, in reply, said that a new Goldfields Bill would be introduced next session, when the question of rating mining property would be dealt with. He considered that there were good reasons for removing the imposition. He could not hold out much hope as to reducing the gold duty, but he thought that means might be devised for carrying out the wishes of the deputation as to miners' rights. On Friday, a deputation, introduced by Mr. Wickes, the Mayor, waited upon the hon. Mr. Reeves at Greymouth, when Mr. Kennedy, the spokesman, drew the attention of the hon. gentleman to the following subjects, and explained the local feeling with regard to them : — The road to Reefton, the road from Greymouth to Omotumotu Creek, the railway to the Coalmine, the main road from the Arnold, the river protection works, and the desirableness of altering the existing boundary-line between the County of Westland and the Province of Nelson. Mr. Reeves, it appears by the Q. R. Argus, gave a most satisfactory recount of the intentions of the General Government on aU the matters brou >ht before him, when tbe Mayor, in t!:e name of the deputation, thanked Mr. Reeves for the interview he had granted nnd the explanations he had given ; and ihe deputation withdrew.

The Reek has been struck in Caples' claim, Boatt; an's, Inaogagoa, three feet iv width.
