In regard to the diamond fields, the Cape Argus says : — " The diamonds known to have been shippei for England by the Cambrian, from Cape Town alone, are valued at about £80,000 • of these 3841 stoDes, valued at £40,673, were sent through tbe Customs, and the remainder by other means." It further remarks : — "As another illustration of wonderful success at diamond fields, we may mention the case of a German captain named Behrman, who, some months ago, had the good fortune to lose his ship, the Elite, at Port Alfred. He went up to the fields, worked hard there for a time, and on Sunday went home as a passenger in the Cambrian, the fortunate possessor of £10,000 in drafts on Europe, and diamonds valued at £5000 more still to be disposed of." Many instances of extraordinary good luck are related in the same paper.
