[ Advertisement.] Refused insertion in last Friday's Colonist, To the Editor of the Colonist. SIR, — That a writer in your last issue should entertain very hostile feelings towards myself, and should hold a ■very mean opinion of some miners, whom he endeavors to make the public believe attended a hole-and-corner meeting in a hut, is a matter of no public moment whatever, but it is matter of great public moment whether the important statements contained in the report of said meeting 1 as printed in the Mail are true or talsp. Had " Fairplay " occupied himself with criticising and rebutting these statements * he would hnve had a perfect right to have written anonymously, but, I think that letters of so purely a personal character as "Fairplay's" should only be permitted to appear on condition that the writer attached his name, in which case T think it would have been seen that " Fairplay " is a member of that happy family whose repose is always so sadly disturbed by such plain speaking as that which took place at the meeting in question. That " Fairplay " winces at it a3 he does, is proof of the wholesomeneßs of the infliction-; and although he has appended the resolutions passed at the meeting to his letter, it is only right that your readers should know that he has expnnged some of the remarks of the speakers as published in the Mail, which remarks are to " Fairplay," no doubt, the least agreeable portion of the proceedings. Yours, &c, James Ghovb. Foxhill, Feb. 21, 1872. * As " Fairplay " makes no attempt to impugn these statements at the same time that he shows such a strong disposition to throw discredit on the meeting and all concerned in it, am I not justified in concluding that he considers them, unassailable. 446
