The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1872.

Drunkenness. — Augustus Yelverton was this morning sent to gaol for three months as an habitual drunkard. Commercial.— Mr. John R. Mabin sold this day by public auction by order of the Oddfellows' Society, half of town acre No. 628 with a slated- roofed dwelling house thereon, to Mr. J. P. Cooke for £140. Westport. — By a telegram received in lown to-day we learn that in the town of Weetport, which recently sustained considerable damage by a flood in the Buller, great havoc has, within the last day or two, been created by the sea which has again encroached upon it. Stoke Wesleyan Sunday School. — The anniversary of this school will be celebrated to-morrow and on Tuesday next, on the former of which days two sermons will be preached by the Rev. W. Cannell, and on the latter there will be a tea party in the schoolroom at 5 o'clock, to be followed by a public meeting. A Strange Discovery. — It was reported at the Police Station this morning that in making an excavation at the back of Mr. Silcock's Bridge Hotel, the laborers had, at a depth of about 20 inches, discovered the skeleton of a full grown man or woman. Of the bones which were first seen but little notice was taken, as they were not supposed to be those of a human being, but after a time the, skull was found with a severe fracture on one side. An inquest, we understand, will shortly be held on the remains. Mr. Hoskins and Miss Colville. — We are glad to learn that in all probability these talented performers will pay Nelson a visit next week. They have recently been acting in Wellington, and by the Independent of Wednesday we see that they had an overflowing house on the previous evening, when the entertainment was under the patronage of the Governor aud Lady Bowen. From Wellington they purpose going to Wauganui on Monday, and from thence they intend coming on to Nelson.
