February 14. — Political matters are quiet. The tourists by the Albambra speak in high terms of New Zealand, and of the steamer. ; , :. Austin, the absconding secretary of the Alfred Hospital, has been committed for trial. Midding, a mining manager at Bendigo, has been committed for trial for manslaughter, for allowing an unsafe rope to be used, whereby Warrel, a miner, lost his life. Cases of indecent exposure are on the increase, and the magistrates have sentenced one fellow to three months' imprisonment and two whippings of 25 lashes each. . Captain Syrnons, formerly commanding the Otago, has been appointed to succeed Rolls on the Western steamer.
