The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1872.

Waimea South Steeplechase Meeting. — The entrance gate, and right to erect booths, &c. on the course were yesterday sold by auction at the Forest Inn, by Messrs. Stavert 8c Co. The prices realised were as follows : — Gate, £23 ; Stand, £12 10s.; Saddling Yard, £3; Stand for horses, £1 ; Grand Stand booth, £7 ; three licensed victuallers booths, £19 10s. ; five small Stands, £3 ss. Total, £69 ss. Accident.— -Yesterday evening as Mr. Hastilow of the Wairau Gorge was taking the pole bullocks out of a dray, he was squeezed between the bullocks and pole, the latter being across his chest. He tried to slip down, but was caught again, his throat being compressed by the pole, which caused severe bruising and such a difficulty of breathing as to cause serious apprehension that he would momentarily expire. He was conveyed to Mr, Silcock's hotel, and we are glad to say that when Messrs. Vickerman and Waring left him at six o'clock this morning he was slightly improving, though his state is yet very alarming. At a recent meeting of the Council of Sandhurst, Councillor May inveighed against the Dorcas Society, saying it onght to be wiped out, that it created paupers who would not otherwise exist, and that it was only an excuse for a lot of so-called ladies to meet together and scandalise one another.
