The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1872.
Mining Shakes. —H. J. L. Augardo quotes Perseverance Shares, £2 103. paid, at ss. Business done this day. City Volunteers. — The monthly inspection parade of the City Rifle Volunteers, Reserve City Rifles, and City Cadet Corps ia ordered for this evening at 6 o'clock. Serious Bush Five. — A gentleman who arrived from Havelock yesterday iraforrns us that a large fire has been burning at the Grove for the last few days. Commencing at the Mahakipawa wharf it extended though the Grove aud over the hills nearly to Pieton, destroying, among other property, the shed in which at oue time was the mill belonging to Messrs Dive and Gaby. A considerable amount of damage has been done to the various tramways in the district. Mablborotjgh Resident Magistrate. — We (Express) understand that $ho new Registrar of Lands for Marlborough, is Mr. Church, of Hokitika, a gentleman welUliked by the people whence he comes, and a barrister of excellent standing. With his other duties will be added the Resident Magistrateship of Blenheim aud Pieton, with an extended jurisdiction.
Excelsior Minstrels. — This Company gave its first performance at the Oddfellows' Hall last night, when there was a moderately full house. There was one feature in tbe performance which was quite a novelty in Nelsoo, namely, the appearance of females in a baud of Christy Minstrels, and judging from the applause that greeted the ladies last night the innovation was ODe that afforded considerable satisfaction to the audience. Mrs. Collins, who has a very sweet voice, was warmly applauded, especially in the song "Put me in my little bed," which was heartily encored, while among Miss Carroll's songs, " The Flower Girl " appeared to be tbe favorite. Mr. Brown's singing was such as to call forth an encore every time that he appeared upon the stage, aud the dancing of Messrs. Collins and Carroll in the marble pedestal dauce, and jig, and reel, was inimitable. The Negro farces were most laughable, particularly " The arrival of the Nelson Mail," which contained a few local hits that were well received, al! the characters being well taken, and showing a considerable amount of humor in those who acted them. There will be another performance
this evening, when, if the manner in which that of last night was received be any criterion, there will be a crowded house.
Caledonian Society. — The third Annual Meeting of the members of this Sociefy was held at Ihe Trafalgar Hotel last night, Sir D. Monro iv the 'chair. The Directors presented their report, which showed that the financial \ osition of tho Society was most favorable, there being a balance of £15 13s. in Land after paying nil expense?, including the purchase of die Grand Stand and other property. After referring to the successful gathering on New Year's day, and to the first dinner of the Society — on which occasion a medal was presented to Mr. John Kidson, as a recognition of hi 3 heroic aud humane conduct in leaving the Lighthouse on' tho night of the 14th September hist, in a small dingy, and saving the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Leaver and Mr. William Watson while they wero in peril of drowning through iho upsetting of their boat, the report goes ou to pay : — " The Directors would desire to urge on the members of the Caledonian Society the important fact, that while tho Annual Gathering is a commemorative event, and one which is intended to provide pleasant amusement, yet there are other objects, which, like that just alluded to, arc of a higher aud more important character ; and it is desirable that members should bear this in mind, and take such steps aa will tend to enlarge the means for carrying out those objects with respect to Education, Herni-rn, Charity, and Literature, which are set forth in the rules of the Society." " The directors desired to place ou record their thanks to Mr. David Burns for the handsome donation of a piece of leasehold hmd in "Waimea-street, with fourteen years still to run, suitable fur Ihe erection of a room for iho Society, and recommended that such a building should be commenced so soon as the state of the funds permitted the outlay."
