MELBOURNE.
January 22. — The charge against Captaiu CoUard of the Sussex in the Police Court has already occupied three clays, but is not yet concluded, the evidence being most lengthy. The salvaging of the cargo is being proceeded with successfully. King, the explorer, died from consumption, and not by drowning as reported. He was burned unostentatiously. - A quanity of tea that was in the Hindu when she was wrecked, has been imported and is giving rise to a newspaper correspondence. It is declared to be unfit for human consumption. A man named Morrison was detected stealing a rug from the shop of Moss, in Bourke-street, and struck fatally by the owner, who has been committed for trial for manslaughter. There have been more Ministerial banquetings at Creswick, Stawell, and Castlemaiue. Diphtheria is rifp, and a Royal Commission has been appointed to enquire into its cause and the best method of treatmeut.
