LONDON.
December 19. — The Prince of Wales was daugerously ill nil last week. The Queen and the Royal Family were summoned to Sandringbam on the Bth. National prayers have beou ordered. The public anxiety is intense, and the general sympathy is unprecedented. Business is neglected, and public meetings have been postponed. The complicated symptoms of the Prince's disease have abated. The last bulletin on Saturday was very cautious. The Prince's groom died yesterday of typhoid fever. The Queen and Princess exhibit wonderful fortitude. Royalty is triumphant and Republicanism has been checkmated. The Aborigines Proteetiou Society is remonstrating with Government on the Polynesian slavery question. The telegraph clerk strike has been suppressed. The bank rate 3 per cent. Obituary. — Lady Burgoyne, Mr. Geo. Hudson, Mr. Atkinson, Australian bauk director. December 23rd, afternoon. — The Queen returned on Wednesday, the 10th. The Prince of Wales was then progressing favourably. Parliament meets on the 6th February. The Speaker, Mr. Denigou, retires. The Tichborne case is adjourned till 15th January. The claimant's counsel closed his case on the seventeenth day. He presented a strong case. Arthur Orton was not produced. Ths public anxiously waifs the result. The Firebraco divorce case resulted in a verdict for the respondent on all tha charges, also, in favor of the pelitiions regarding the counter accusations. A new trial is demanded A national subscription has been commenced for the restoration of Warwick Castle. The Orleans Princes have taken their seats in the Assembly. The dispute with Tbiers caused considerable excitement. The income-tax is under discussion. Mr. Edward Wilson has called an influential meeting in the city for the promotion of the sale of Australian meats. The demand continues. Wool is firm. Copper. — Burra and Waterloo, £92 to £93; Hunter, £90; Sydney oil, £35 to £38; sperm, £90. The wheat market is depressed by the heavy arrivals. Adelaide, 635. Queensland debentures are admitted to the Stock Exchange. Victoria sixes, 113 to 117; fives, 106; Sydney, 105; Adelaide, short dates, 111; long dates, 116; Tasmauiao, 111; Queensland, 113. Consols, 92%. Obituary. — The Eari of Ellenborough, Darbysbire (the cricketer). The steamer Delaware foundered at Scilly during a gale. The Great Britain put iuto HolyheaJ. The Iron Duke and the Windsor Castle also put back. The latter had been in a collision.
