CRICKET.
A match .was played in Mr. Canning's paddock at Richmond, on Wednesday last, between the Richmond ami Waimea West clubs. The following is the score, the principal feature of which is the enormous number of byes, the result, it is said, of tho lumpy state of the ground : —
RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. [Before J. Sharp, Esq., R.M.] This Day. Henry Valentine Saher was summoned for having, ou the niorniog of Sunday last, offended against the 26 ih Clause of the "Nelson Waterworks Act," which provides " That any person who shall permit any water supplied under the provisious of this Act to be taken from the premises occupied by such person, or to be used elsewhere than upon the premises so occupied, shall for every such offence forfeit and pay any sum not exceeding ten pounds." Defendant said that the water, on the occasion referred to, was taken without his knowledge. llichard Adam was called, and being sworn, said : On the morning of Sunday last I saw Mrs. Harvey nt Mrs. Salter's tap with a bucket. I waited and saw her fill and carry away a bucket of water. I have not seeu this done on other occasions. The Resident Magistrate :Is Mr. Harvey supplied with water from the Nelson Waterworks ? Witness : I do not know. Alfred Hibble, being sworn, said : Mr. Harvey is not supplied wiih the water. When I told Mr. Salter of the complaict, lie said that when the water had been diverted from that part of the main near where he resides, iu order to put on other service, he had frequently had to obtain water from Mr. Harvey's well, and had in return let him occasionally have some, though on this occasion it had been taken without his knowledge. The Resident Magistrate : As this is the first offence complained of under the Act, I shall but inflict a small fine, although defendant has rendered himself liable to a penalty of ren pounds. Defendant was fined five shillings and costs, £1 Oa. 6d.
