The Stranded Whale at Hokitika promises to undergo a metamorphose, and to become a white elephant to its owners. " Nothing," says the Star, " has yet beeu dove in the way of dissection, and the huge mass is already so far advanced iv decomposition as to cause a . most pestilential stench." Ahaura Races. — These races do not appear to have beeu a success judging from the remarks of the local press which says : — lt would be difficult to cite an instance where horse racing has been attended with such utter and ignominious failure as in the present instance. With a large sum of public meney at their disposal — a sum sufficiently large, if properly used, to attract some of iho beßt racing stock in New Zealaud, has been frittered away by the stewards upon a ciass of events that at most display their uufitness aud incompetence for the position they have filled. They wanted locul races, and they bave liad them — with a vengeance. From the first day of their election to the publication of the programme, their every action has beeu governed by this pet prejudice, and they have met their deserts, and caunot now expect to escape the public odium which their narrowwinded stupidity has brought upon them.
