WAIMEA ROAD BOAD.
Tuesday, January 2. The Board met at the Bridge Hotel. All the members present. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary reported the result of the proceedings at the last Richmond Court, aud received instructions as to future proceedings when judgments were obtained. The consideration of the Schedule forwarded by the Commissioner of Crown Lands was postponed; also, of the road to the Orinoco. The proposal of Mr. H. Buscb, in reference to the road in Aniseed Valley, which was not received in time for last meeting was considered, but no reason was shewn for altering the former decision. Mr. W. H. Cole attended to request that some work should be done in the Quail Valley. This was deferred till funds are obtained. f The Secretary reported the receiving from Mr. J. Rutherford the sum of £21 9s. as contribution towards the "Corner road." The Secretary reported having served notices on Messrs. Macfeay and Stafford.
Mr. Mackay applied by letter for an extension of time, as he was commencing harvest. The Secretary was instructed to proceed against Mr. Stafford. The list of rates for the cm-rent year was laid on the table- The Secretary was directed to omit, iu the heading, the clause that rates will be received by members of the Board, and substitute, "that they will be received by the Secretary and Overseer only. Messrs. Barnicoat, Baigent, and Rout were appointed as a deputation from the Board to wait on his Honor the Superindent to represent to him the financial condition of the Board, consequent on the unexpected noD-payment of three-fourths of the amount voted by the Provincial Council. An application from the Richmond School Committee for permission to take gravel from the Reserve for the School approaches, was acceded to. Mr. R. Eden attended in reference to work done by him on a by-road, and for which a grant was promised by the Board. The Overseer was directed to examine the work and report. The Overseer reported that during the month the roadmen had been employed forming the road betweeu the Wai-iti and the south boundary; that protection posts, i &c, had been put up at the culvert by Mr. Newth's, and that similar work was needed by Mr. White's; that all the large stones had been picked off the main road from Tutu Line to Forty Line Bridge ; the "Clover Road" prepared for gravelling, and arrangements made for fencing in the chasm near Mr. Kelling's; the watertables on Jenkins' Hill cleared, and slips on Port road removed ; that Mr. Rose had completed his contract at Thorpe ; the roadmen had been covering bridges and falling timber at the roadside in Dovedale ; part of the road in Eve's Valley had been gravelled, and the long cutting repaired at a cost altogether of £15, a further sum of £o being still required to complete the repairs; that Mr. Tomlinson had failed to put in the promised culverts, although reminded; that the ditches opposite Mr. Palmer's required clearing; out. The Overseer was directed to carry on the works recommended, and the Secretary to give Mr. Tomlinson notice. The Board being informed that an attempt had been made to burn the new bridge over the " Deep Gully," in the Wairoa Gorge, it was resolved that a reward of £5, payable on the conviction of the offender, should be offered. A warrant, for £141 2s. 9d. v«as signed by the Board.
