iNTEnruovixciAL Cricket Match. — The match between Ofa<_o and Canterbury has resulted in a great victory for the latter province which in its first innings scored as many as Otago's total for the two innings. Election Kews. — The following appeared in the Wellington Independent of Friday last:— "Mr. Ralph Richardson has, we believe, vacated his seat for the district of Nelson Suburbs, iu consequence of private -.flairs requiring his presence in England. The candida'ea spoken of are Mr." J. C. Richmond, and Mr. D. M. Luckie, editor of the Nelson Colonist. The contest, will probably be a severe one, as it is known th n fc the constituency is tolerably equally divided in political opinion." This is news to us, nor have we hc-eu able to find anyone who had heard of tho rumored change prior to learning ifc from the Independent, which must surely have some mysterious source of information.
Immigration. — At, the Ellesmere (Canterbury ) agiicultural dinner, on Thursday last, the Hon. W. Reeves, in responding to tlie toast of the General Assembly, said that orders had been sent to the AsjentGeneral in England lo send out 8000 immigrants during 1872, which number, supplemented by Colonel Fielding's special settlement immigrants, and those to be introduced by Messrs. Broaden, would probably increase the population of the Colony by some 10,000 adults within tha year. The Government would also anxiously promote agriculture, and as soon as it, could seo its way it proposed to form a Board of Agriculture. He also said that arrangements had been made between the General and Canterbury Governments, under which the former would contribute £98,000, and the latter £42,000, to connect the various railway lines in the province. The details of the scheme were not yet complete, but surveys had been completed.
