New Year's Follies. — Those senseless larks that are invariably played off id Nelson on New Year's Eve were not wanting lastnight and early this morning, when, in addition to the smudging of doors and walls with paint, and erasiujr the names of buisuess men from i.beir dlice fronts, a party of men, consisting chiefly of sailors from the Alhambra, dragged out (he Dun Mountain Buss from Mr. Stevenson's yard, and run it up and duwu the rails until they contrived to smash the springs, thus causing several pounds worth of damage, besides depriving the owners of a good day's earnings. Nrw Year's Day. — Holiday makers have been busily engaged all the morning in makiug their various preparations :md resortiog to the different spots selected by them for speuding their New Year's Day. Traps have gone into the country by dozens, conveying picnic parties who preter to cut the town for one day at least; the Rocks have had iheir fair share of visitors, while Mr. Richardson's Paddock, where the Caledonian Sports are being held, promises to absorb the greater part of the pleasure-seeking portion of the community. At Richmond, the Wesleyaiis celebrate the anniversary of their local church iu the evening by a tea ami public meeting, and at the Wairnea South Institute, and the Temperance Hall, Nelson, there are also to be tea parties.
