The fourth series of wool sales closed on the 11th of October ; 137,997 bales were sold, including 39,438 bales New Zealand ; toal sales for year, 652.299 bales. New Zealand ranged as follows :— Fleece, Is. sd. to 2s. 4d£. ; scoured, lambs', Is. Bd. to 2s. per lb. In flax, a fair amount of business has been done ; about 2,500 bales were sold at full rates. An improvement in the mode of preparation is noticeable. Hides not so active. Arrivals with hides ; England. Wellingham.andßoslin Castle, from Otago ; Crusader, from Lyttelton ; Wild Duck, from Auckland ; which, with Australian arrivals, brought 4,475 salted hides. New Zealand, first heavy, 6d. In tallow there is a very good market, at an advance of 2s. for mutton, and Is. for beef. Secubities.— New Zealand Sixes, IS9O, HO to 112 ; Fires 101 to 102 ; Consolidated, 100 to lol§ ; Sixes, June and December, 111 to 113 ; New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, j; to J premium ; New Zealand Trust and Loan Company, 1$ to 1 § premium ; Otago and Southland Investment, .} to f premium ; Bank of New Zealand, I^'to 19$; Bank of Otago,3-*discounr. Consols, 92£ to 93. Money still dear. On October 2, the Bank of England advanced its discount to 5 per cent , and on November 2, after a consultation, the Directors declined to reduce it. Still the Bank is very strong in bullion, and the reserve of notes is largply increased, Other securities have fallen off. In the open market matters are quiet, and transactions arc reported at 3h to 4 per cent. The supply of money is excessive. The French Government has 24,000,000 sterling ready for the payment of the fourth instalment of war indemnity. Shipping.— Arrived at Gravesend. October 26, Crusader, from Lyttelton ; Wild Duck at Gravesend, October 28, from Auckland ; Roslin C*stle, from Otago, October 28. Nailed : Caduceus, for Auckland. Loading for Auckland : England, Naomi ; Wild Duek, for Canterbury. Sailed : Cyrene, October 18 ; Harvest Home, October 9. Loading : Charlotte Gladstone, Crusader. For Nelson— loading, Tyrol. For Otago : sailed—Warrior Queen, October 29. Loading: Euterpe, Jessie Headman. For Wellington — loading, Celoeno. For Wanganui : sailed — Malay, October 11. The Charlotte Gladstone eleared from London on the 2nd November, and the Celceno on the Ist.
