The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1871.
On Monday, being Christmas Day, there will be no issue of the Evening Mail, On Tuesday, Boxing Day, it will be published at Noon. Nelson Regatta. — The arrangements for the regatta are uow completed, and a good day's sport may fairly be looked for on Tuesday next. The Yacht Race for the Cup "presented by Messrs Shaw, Saville, and Co., will not be competed for on that day, as there aro not a sufficient number of boats entered. The race has therefore been postponed for a couple of months, by which time some of the boats tbat are now being built will be ready to enter. Provincial Scholarships. — It affords us the greatest satisfaction to report tbat in reply to a deputation from the Central Board of Education tbat waited upon tbe Superintendent this morning, bis Honor replied that the sum of £160, voted by the Council for the Provincial Scholarships would be forthcoming this year for the purpose for which it was set apart. The couutry schools will, consequently, not be deprived of these valuable prizes, as it was at one time feared would be the case, and the examination of candidates, we presume, will shortly be proceeded with. Chtjrch Decorations. — The Christmas decorations of the various churches promise to be superior this year to anything of tbe kind yet attempted in Nelson. In Christ Church busy hands have been at work for the last two days in settiDg up illuminated texts, monograms, and appropriate designs, and the work of decorating with evergreens aud flowers is being energetically proceeded with. At All Saints' too no paios have been spared in rendering the church worthy of the great Christian festival, while ot St. Mary's the ornamentation promises to be at least equal to that of any former year. It is unfortunate that Christmas Day should fall on a Monday, as the work, with the exception of that which can be done early in the morning, will have to be completed to-day, but, undaunted by this adverse circumstance, tbose who take an interest in these matters have, if we may judge from the appearance of Christ Church, which we had an opportunity of visiting this afternoon, determined thot their efforts shall be crowned with a result unequalled ou uny previous occasion.
