Regatta Club. — A meeting of the members of this Club will be held at the Custom House Hotel, oa Monday evening next. Meeting at Wakapuaka. — At the meeting of ratepayers held at the Black Home, on Thursday eveuinpt last,, it was resolved, by a rmjoiity of 40 to 4, that it was not expedient to erect a toll-gate in the district. %

Board of Works. — At the usual fortnightly meeting held last night, five tenders were received for making and carting bricks for the new sewage works, when that of Eobert Carter was accepted. The various prices asked will be published on Monday. From the eastern tank of the Mataura we learn that the mortality amongst the season's lambs fias been something frightful. In one instance (a flock of 6000 ewes) it is reported that not more than 200 lambs have survived. The mortality is mainly attributed to the covering in of the feed by the heavy falls of snow and hail with which the district has been visited. At a wedding:, the other doy, one of the guests, who is often a little absentminded, observed, gravely, " I have often remarked that there have been more women than men married this year." A Scotch Paper tells the story of a farmer who, after the burial of his wife, drove a hard bargain with the gravedigger, who, bringing his hand down on the shovel, exclaimed, "Down wi' anither shilling or up she comes !
