GENERAL SUMMARY.
In the Chicago fire, 500 persons were burned and 12,000 buildings destroyed. The loss sustained through the fire by the London Insurance Companies is about one million sterling. Another Fenian raid has taken place in Canada, but failed. General O'Neil, the leader of the Fenians, appears to be infatuated. The rebels were captured. The wool sales close one penny lower. The steamer with the Australian submarine cable on board reached the Cape of Good Hope on the 17th September, bound to Port Darwin. Another sub-marine cable is projected in Loudon for the purpose of uniting Honolulu with Melbourne. Sabrina Won the Cambridgeshire Stakes. The Government has refused to release the remainder of the Feniau prisoners. The Queen's health is improved. Mr. Gladstone reviewed the work of the session in a speech at Geenwicb, and promised further reforms next session. Sir Hercules Robinson has been appointed to succeed the Earl of Bel more as Governor of New South Wales. Wheat, 2s. lower. Improved sperm oil, £51. Victorian Debentures, 116; Tasmanian, 110. Consols, 92|. It is reported that Brigham Young has fled from America. The German Parliament opened on 1 6th October. The evacuation by the Germans of the remainder of France proceeds. The payment of the balance of indemnity has been arranged satisfactorily. A strong public feeling of indignation has arisen against the authorities on the subject of the wreck of the Megaera. The cikptain and engineer of the ship baye given evidence, and they declare that the*. vessel was thoroughly rotten. A great fire has occurred at Windsor. The BaDk rate of discount is 5 per cent. Field-Marshall Sir John Burgoyne is dead. The trial of the Tichborne case was to be resumed on the 7th of November. Arthur Orton is expected to be produced as a witness. The yacht Cambria beat the Leonora twice in the International race. Obituary. — Earl of Dunraven. Sir Hugh Hal!, Alderman Moore, Sheriff Young, Sir Roderick Murchison, Charles Babbage, General Patrick Mahon, Colonel Brown, Lady Palmer, Sir Alexander Cockburn, and Mr. Gough, the well-known temperance lecturer. Her Majesty subscribed £500 towards the fund for the relief of the sufferers by the Chieago fire. A severe monetary crisis has occurred in Paris, owing to the scarcity of specie. It is rumored that the policy of the Government with reference to the Fijis is not finally settled. There is good demand for wool, and a fair business done at full rates. has been appointed Inspector of tbo [English and Scottish Baok (?). A Royal warrant has been gazetted providing for tbe reconstruction of the army. The Queen has been able to take a drive. Cholera has ceased in Constantinople. Tbe French elections have resulted as follows : — Bonapariists, 94; Legitimists, 194; Radicals, 391; Moderate Republicans, 494; Conservatives, 867 (Query, 367). — There are obvious mistakes in tbe figures. FRANCE. The new taxes have created hardships and dissatisfaction. Heavy outrages have been committed on German residents in Lyons. A Court of Inquiry has been appointed to try tbe officers v*ho capitulated duriug the war. Twenty-five thousand Comrauuists are still in custody. Their trials are proceeding slowly. , SPAIN. King Amadeus has returned to Madrid, after a triumphant tour through the Provinces. Tbe Ministry hav6 been defeated by a majority of ten. A new .Ministry has been formed by Malcamp. GERMANY. Austria and Germany are said to be of one mind in favor of the maintenance of peace. Russia is jealous of tbeir friendly feeling. ITALY. Cardinal Buonaparte despatched a letter to the Emperor by express. A tunnel through Mount Gotba is projected. The estimated work is eight years' labor.
