"Wellington, November 6. The Premier to-day laid on the table a copy of Bishop Patteson's Memorandum to the Synod at Dunedin on the subject of the slave trade. In doing so he expressed the sorrow and consternation which had been experienced by the tidings of the Bishop's martyrdom, saying that no language could designate the baseness of those wretches who, by illegal practices, had incited the natives to acts of revenge. He would to-morrow move a respectful address to the Queeu, praying her Majesty to take immediate steps to su'press the infamous slave trade. The Ofcago Land Bill was read a third time and passed.
