/y , , MUEDER OF BISHOP PATTERSON AND OTHERS. A Colonist slip, published this afternoon, gives the following painful intelligence: — Auckland, November 1. Arrived, the Southern Cross, missionary schooner. She reports the intelligence of tli e murder of the Bishop of Melanesia, the Key. J. Atkin, and a Native Teacher. The murder was committed at Nukapu, Small Reef island, in the Swallow group. Bishop Patterson, visited the island apparently on friendly terms with the inhabitants. ••; • ,<, -,■ . . " On this occasion he was ashore in a canoe accompanied by only two natives from the schoouer. A short time after the schooner's boat was manned, and the Rev. J. Atkin, a teacher, and others, pot off for the shore. Canoes full of Islanders attacked this boat fatally, wounding Mr; Atkin and the teacher. The Bishop was at this time ashore. The schooner's boat again attempted to effect landing, and; ithe Islanders were then observed turning a «anpe adriffc.
