The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1871.
Kegatta Club. — A meeting of members of this club will be held at the Trafalgar Hotel, to-morrow evening. Shipping Infokmation. — We understand that the steamship Alharobra will arrive here to-morrow morning, and leave for Melbourne to-morrow night ar, 11 o'clock; and the Rangitoto will arrive here to-nigbt and leave for Southern ports and Melbourne some lime to-morrow. Nelson and Foxhiix Railway. — The following resolution , to be proposed at the meeting to-night, has been handed 10 us for publication : — That a railway to Foxhill, constructed on a plan so economical as to admit of future extension to the West Coast, will be highly beneficial to the Province of Nelson, and may be carried out with financial success. Scientific Association. — At the special meeting held last evening, Sir David Monro, President, in the chair, one new member was elected, and the Bishop of Nelson was nominated to vote in election of Governors of the New Zealand Institute. The Secretary reported having received from Prefessor Agassiz^ Harvard College, Cambridge, Mass., Baron Ferdinand Von Mueller, Government Botanist, Victoria, and Dr. Hector, Colonial Museum, Wellington, several Books aud Pamphlets on scientific subjects, which were ordered to be acknowledged with the Society's thanks. Oddfellows Hall. — A capital entertainment was given lasfc night by the combined " Original " and " Star " Minstrels, for the benefit of Mr. ffm. Good. The hearty 3nd repeated .ipplause that greeted the songs and jokes must have shown to the performers that their efforts to give an entertainment worthy of the charitable purpose for which it had been got up were thoroughly appreciated by the audience, which, considering that there has of late been rather a surfeit of Christy Minstrel performances, was a very fair one. The crowded state of our columns precludes our giving an extended notice of the entertainment, but it is sufficient to say that it passed off as successfully as could possibly have been desired. Public Meetin g.— lt is scarcely necessary to call attention to the important public meeting to be held to-night for the purpose of strengthening the hands of the Nelson members in requiring of tbe Government that the Nelson and Foxhill Railway should be one of the lines to be commenced during the ensuing year. As the commencement of a line running through the Island to the West Coast, this is a matter of more than mere Provincial interest ; it is one of Colonial importance, and as such, should be insisted upon by our members. That the meeting to-night will be largely attended, we have no doubt, nor that those present will be almost unanimous in passing such resolutions as will clearly show our representatives that the people of the Province are in earnest in their demand that this line of railway shall be undertaken without delay.
