To-Night's Entertainment. —We need scarcely remind our readers of ihe entertainment to be given at the Oddfellows' Hall, this evening, for the benefit iof Mr. William Good. The Original Nelson Christy Minstrels and the Star Minstrels have combined for the occasion, and we are assured that the result of such a combination will be to place before the Nelson public such a performance as would be a credit to even a professional company. The Annexation Question. — From the Grey River Argus "we lenrn that a public meeting was, at the requisition of the Mayor of Hokitika, called by n Mr, Stevenson, at Greenstone, on Monday Week, for the purpose of obtaining an expression of opinion against the dismemberment of the county. About 400 miners were present, and greatly to the disgust, no doubt, of the conveners of the meeting, the following resolutiou was unanimously carried: — "That, in the opinion of this meetings it. is advisable that the County be dismembered, and this district annexed to the Province of Nelson." The remonstrance addressed by Balak to Balaam, must have suggested itself to the mind of the Mayor of Hokitika when he learned the result of the meeting. Provincial Charges. — On the motion for going into Committee of Supply on Thursday last, Mr. O'Rorke moved that the proposed transference of expenditure hitherto known as " provincial charges " to "general charges," is unjust ;to the Provinces of Auckland,, Taranaki, Nelson, and Otago, and ought not lo be legalised, inasmuch as itr is shewn by Table I (3) appended to Financial Statement, that Auckland- thereby loses per annum £13,759 25.4 d.; Taranaki, £1,648 11s. 2d.; Nelson, £9,293 10s. lOd; Otago, £15,066 12s. 7d. The Speaker Called to. Order. — The Wellington' correspondent .of the Otago Daily Times '.writes -:-r-The,other night Mr. Dillpn Bell, was placed in the most humiliating position which I venture to say 'a; Speaker \ever' occupied in any Parliament The House was in Committee of Supply, and some, reference was made to the habit of' successive Ministers sending special envoys to England, the Commissioners of 1869, aud Mr. Yogel being particularly, referred to. Mr. Gisborne, ; in,, his dreary way, replied to what had been=said, but not at all eflFectively, so Mr. Bell as usual came to the ■rescue,- and ; made a long;speech ; .| la the course of it, he said something about *• the Colony sendiDg home its ablest men "' —and theu, breakings off and ilookiDg conscious, as though. -he was himself one of the men referred to,, he said, " No, X should not have said that." Mr. Shepherd, who was sittiug close by, remarked, "Ah, but you meant it," at which there was a roar of laughter. Mr. Bell lost temper, ami turned savagely on Mr. Shepherd, accusing him of gross bad taste, aud was beginning a regular scold, when ihe Chairman called "order." Mr. Bell turned round and said, "Did I understand the Chairman called me to ordeiv?", ... Mr. O'Rorke replied, "Yes, I called the hon. member to order.. Personalities of this kind caunot be tolerated, in this House." A more cutting and humiliating, rebuke was certainly never administered, to a gentlemaD, who, from his position, should be a model, of that order, for the preservation of which-the House looks to him.
