CORRESPONDENCE.

*«• We are desirous of affording every reasonable facility for the discussion of public subjects; but it must be understood that we arc in no way responsible for the opinions expressed, by correspondents. To the Editor op the Neison Evening Maii,. Sir — As your paragraph of yesterday concerning the testimonial to the Rev. Father Cbareyre, in its concise form, may not be well understood, and may cause dissatisfaction to certain parties, you will allow me to explain, that the gold hunting watch which was presented by the Catholics of Nelson to the Eev. Father Chareyre, was presented, it is true, by the Catholics of Nelson, hut it was in the name of. the Catholics of Takaka and Collingwood, who can justly claim the merit of the present. As to the beautifully illustrated address, it was the testimonial from the Catholics of Nelson, who, at the same time, made the rev. gentleman understand that they had another suitable testimonial to present to him, but it was not finished yet. I beg also to state that on the Sunday previous, the Rev. Father Chareyre had been presented by the Catholics of Wakefield and Waimeas with a purse which he immediately, in a most disinterested spirit, banded over to the Building Committee of Wakefield towards clearing the debt which lay on St. Joseph's Church, a church which, he himself erected by his persevering exertions nt a cost of£Hs6, with a debt of only £75, which nt the occasion of his leaving was reduced to £20. I am, &c, A. M. Gaein. October 3, 1871.
