Assembly Rooms. — " Mysterious Shadows" which, it is said, afford fun for everybody, are to be exhibited at tbe Assembly Room, this evening. A Telegram in the Daily Times of Tuesday says : — A meeting of those members who voted against the Government on Friday night was held to-day. Only those who voted or paired against the Government on that occasion were invited. Nineteen members were present. It was unanimously resolved to form a regular opposition, and Mr. Stafford accepted the leadership. Testimonial to the Rev. Father Chareyre. — A testimonial, consisting of a gold hunting watch, accompanied by an address, was presented on Saturday last by tbe Catholics of Nelson to the Rev. Father Chareyre, on the occasion of his leaving Nelson for tbe West Coast. The rev. gentleman, has, by his assiduous attention to the wants of bis flock, rendered himself most popular here, and the best wishes of those amoDgst whom he has been accustomed to labor will attend him in his new sphere of duties. The address was beautifully engrossed on vellum in Old English characters, the capitals being in vermillioD, aad the smaller letters in black. The work was performed by Mr. A. McKellar Wix, and the tasteful and elegant manner in which it is ornamented fully entitles that gentleman to take raDk as an artist of no ordinary merit. Diocesan Synod. —At the Synod on Friday, a most interesting discussion arose on a motion of Mr. D. Jennings' having reference to the desirability or otherwise of the retention, as part of the Church of England service, of a formulary, to which many and grave objectious have frequently been raised, namely, the Athanasian Creed. After a lengthy and earnest the following resolution was, on the motion of the Rev. C. 0. Mules, agreed to : — " That this Synod desires to express its satisfaction at the resolution unanimously adopted by the Upper House of Convocation of the Province of Canterbury (England) on June 14, 1871, to the effect that the most Rev. President be requested to communicate with the Archbishop of the Northern Province with a view to bringing before a meeting of the Bishops of both Provinces, and other Bishops having jurisdiction, and in communion with the Church of England, the desirability or otherwise of revising: the existing translation of the Athanasian Creed, and of introducing any changes in, or additions to, the rubric prefixed to the Creed in the Book of Common Prayer, provided that they be only such changes or additions as shall not in any way affect the authority of the Creed as a standard of doctrine iv the Church of England; and respectfully requests his Lordship the President to communicate with the most Rev. tbe Primate of New Zealand with & view to his forwarding to His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury this expression of its sympathy, and its hope that a solution of the difficulties which exist in connection with the Athanasian Creed may speedily be found ."
