THE late Enquiry respecting the Motueka Election, which has remlted in placing Mr. Charles Parker in the seat, has also disclosed a system of purchasing votes, and of personating voters, which is destructive to purity of election, and deprives men who have not a large command of money from entering on an election contest. The principal aim of Mr. Parker's friends ia aiding him to obtain his legal rights before a Parliamentary Committee, was to expose and, if possible, to prevent the recurrence in Nelson, of a system which is so pernicious and degrading, as well as unjust to the public. This aim has been successful, and although the Committee have found that bribery was not proved,- the common sense of the people who have read the evidence is convinced that bribery was openly proved, and admitted in the course of that enquiry. The result of the enquiry, although thus satisfactory in one sense, is yet unsatisfactory in another, inasmuch as the decision places on the shoulders of the rightfully-seated member a burden of costs which he ought not to be allowed to bear. These costs, including witnesses and other expenses, amount to fully £200. An appeal is made to all those who desire to see electoral justice done, for assistance to meet this outlay. Subscriptions may be forwarded to. W. WILKIE. Treasurer for the Motueka Election Fund.
