September 2. — The Permissive Bill now before Parliament is being strenuously opposed on its second reading. A calamitous fire has occurred at Sandhurst in the Beehive Chambers, brokers' quarters, when much raining scrip, and company registries were destroyed. Sailed : Ceres and Gleuer for Greymouth; Zephyr for Hokitika; Our Hope for Auckland ; Hero for Sydney and Auckland; Great Britain, for England. Arrived: Rita from the Thames; Eliza Firth from Auckland ; H. M, S. Blanche from Sydney. . Tookey's shares £30 to £30 10s. Adelaide flour is selling at £15 to £15 10s. Prices of New Zealand produce unchanged.
