The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1871.
Artizans' Association.— A meeting of members for the purpose of taking -into consideration the new rules, will be held this evening, when a full attendance is requested. iL Government Grounds.--— A great improvement has been effected this morning in the appearance of : the Bridge-street approach to the Government Buildings by the removal of the dilapidated paling fence that has so long proved an eyesore to all passers by . Perseverance Company. — We learn that an order was despatched to Melbourne, by the Alhambra last night, for ten additional head of stampers for the Perseverance battery. It will be seen by advertisement that tenders are invited for the execution of certain works at the mine. Winter Evening* Lectures.'— lt ia . announced that the Bishop of Nelson will deliver tbe ninth of this series of lectures, on Friday evening next, the subject he has chosen being "The Manuscript Sources of the New Testament." The lecture will be illustrated by fac-simile drawings of some of the most ancient manuscripts. Bijou Dramatic Company. -—-..A theatrical entertainment will be given .at the Oddfellows' Hall to-morrow evening, by a local company, comprising many of our best known amateurs. The pieces' to be acted are " Jocrisse the Juggler," and the "Virginian Mummy," and we expect a most pleasant evening's entertainment. Pedestrianism. — Our local athletes will be afforded an opportunity of seeing some really good displays of pedestrianism on Saturday afternoon,; when Austin,, thai Australian champion, and Edwards the ■■• champion .. walker, will .exhibit., in the Botanical Gardens, the former undertaking to run 10 miles, and'the other to walk 7, within the hour. Prizes are also offered for amateurs, so that an excellent afternoon's sport may be -anticipated. The, admission to the ground has been fixed at the low rate of one shilling, in order to allow all to attend, and, no doubt, there will be a large crowd assembled. Concert.— The concert in aid of the All Saints' Church Organ Fund took place last night, and the pecuniary results must, we should think, be highly satisfactory to those who have been at so much trouble to ensure a successful entertainment, as the Provincial Hall was crowded from one end to the other. Owing to the music beiDg of. an entirely, sacred.character — in our opinion a great mistake-7-the . evening passed off somewhat heavily,' notwithstanding the careful manner in which the various performers. rendered the parts allotted to them, and the longing that prevailed for "something of a lighter and more cheerful nature showed itself in theenthusiastic bprst.of applause that greeted the only piece of the evening that partook of anything approacbiog to a secular character. We do hot propose further to criticise the concert, to the preparation of which it waa quite clear that the'"peru -formers had devoted much of their ..tufts ' and attention, and we heartily congratulate, them on the success that has_attended their effOrtS. .... ______;__; ; .__ y.- I L.A x . ,
