The Dundee Advertiser records a donation of £500 to the Dundee Orphan Institution by a Mr David Gardiner, of Westport. This worthy individual has been all bis life a plain hard working man,who has always wrought at his trade,that of a cooper, with his own hands, never employing a journeyman under him, and selling in the market himself the production of his own handicraft. The Edinburgh Courant is advertised for sale. The advertisement states that the Courant was established in the year 1718, under the editorship of Daniel Defoe. A. Chinese Execution. — A correspondent writes from Nanking in April : — The man who stabbed the Viceroy Ma at Nanking has been put to death. More than a thousand slices were cut from his flesh- in various parts of his body, and he. only cried out once, viz., when his heart was pierced. The only words he said were, "What has become of my son ? " The gall bladder (the seat of courage) is credibly reported to have measured upwards of two , Chinese inches, which is quite sufficient to account for his wonderful; courage and fortitude. — Shanghai Courier. The Indianopolis Sentinel says: — "A farmer was decapitated by a mowing machine with which he was at work on his! premises, near Southport, last Tuesday afternoon. At the time of the accident the farmer was examining some portion of the machine which had got out of gear, when the horses attached suddenly started, causing the blades to revolve, one of them striking the man in the; back of the neck, severing the head from the body as though guilliotined. A youthful sou of the deceased' witnessed the! terrible accident, and, dumb with horror, grasped the head by the hair, and ran with it into his mother's presence."
