The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1871.

Alpine Quartz- Mining Company — The whole of the machinery at this mine is now erected, and it is intended that the first crusbiug shall commence about the cud of tl^is week. The reef is said lo look exceedingly well, and tbe parties* working it are very sanguine of su.cpss. Lyell. — The news from the Lyell reefs is very good; exceedingly rich stone ■is reported to have been struck, aud dull j as no doubt these words wili fall on the reader's ears, there is but little fear that the crushing, which are vow quite irorain- ! enf, will once more raise the spirit of the \ public in reference* to the Nelson reefs. Sutherland Goldmining Company. As many persons in Nelson are interested in this company we publish the following resolutions which were adopted at. a meeting of shareholders held nt Blenheim ou Friday evening last : — " 1, That the nominal capital of the Sutherland Goldmining Company shall be increased so that it be £6000, and that the nominal value of each share slisJl he £1 ]Os. sterling. 2. That the Directors are hereby empowered to contract a loau for a term not exceeding six. mouths, nor exceeding the sum of £1000, and to pay inreiest for the same at a rate not exceeding the sum of 10 per cent, per annum, aud to give as security for the same any two calls in addition to the plant anil property of the Company, such sum to be inclusive of Aae sum of £500 authorised to j bp borrowed at the extraordinary meeting held on the 24th Mai eh, 1871. 3. That noiwi«hs»andin_{ the resolution of the j extraordinary meeting held on the 24th day of March , 1871, the Directors a>e hereby authorised to make calls uot exceeding 2s 6d per share, snbjert to the like condition ns provided in the Deed nf Assofiation in respect of the e.dls iher-in provioVd for, and that tbe sum of £1,500 be called up within six months." All Saints' Organ Fund. — The harmonium lately in use at All Saints' Church having been found. to be quite inadequate for the size of the building, especially since its enlargement, the members of the choir formed .themselves iuto a Committee for the purpose of raising funds for the purchase of a more suitable instrument, and Mr. Stanton having just imported one of Mason and Hamlin's new cabinet organs it was taken to the church for the purpose of testing its capabilities. As it proved to be ail the Committee could desire, it was at once decided that it should be retained, if the necessary funds, about £100, could possibly be raised. For this purpose jt is intended that a concert shall be given at the Provincial Hall, on Tuesday evening next, in which the members of the choirs of All Saints' and Christ Churches, as well as of the Harmonic Society, will take part, and from the time and attention that has been devoted to the necessary practice, particularly of the various choruses, we may anticipate a great musical treat. We are very glad to notice the increased interest that is being taken in this town in church music, which is in almost all the places of public worship gradually assuming that importance which, of late years especially, has been attached to it in the old country. The instrument which it is proposed to purchase for All Saints has two manuals, corresponding to tho "swell" aud "great organ " of a pipe organ, with swell pedals, manual couplers, &c. The various slops are individually very clear and melodious in tone, while the full organ is rich and powerful. We hope to see the funds largely iucreased by the proceeds of Tuesday's concert. Value of a Cbinaman.— At Ballarat, nn engine-driver has been fined le. by Judge Poll I man, for causing the death of a Chinaman. The value of the work done in 1870 by the 'children in the Industrial and Reformatory Schools *in Victoria* was £8,351 Bs. On Monday Week a child'' of Mr.'; Eglinton, ju'b.j of the Lower Lake, fell accidentally into a copper of boiling water and was .fearfully • scalded.; > ■ ffhe, , ■i.ij.uries;? suatainediare'so great as Uo preclude- any.l hopes of the child-^oiily tWo-yeaVa^fage'' i-rs_.bSfe* tn^--**-*** Wairarapa Mercurg. ■/<»-ii'A><*.;.S:-.'' ..'"■■ ; ':■ „.'"'' -' :'

A Chinaman Shot. — About 8 o'clock one night, a man was seen by a workman l of the Galatea claim, Smythedale, (Vie- : toria ih the sluice-boxes. The workman i called three time?, and receiving no j auswer, fired a shot. The intruder was found to be a Chinaraau, who received the shot in his back, aud he is not expected to live. . " ' A: A a - . A Large Black Whale has been washed ashore near the Stony River,Taranaki, and the natives have secured it. Whilst they were engaged in cutting out tbe blubber, the body of the whale turned over aud fell upon one of the inatives, breaking his ribs. The whale was about sixty feet long. Comic. — A-new work is advertised in the Auckland papers as about to be published in a few days. The title is" Rhymes without reason," arid it is'tlrus described iv tbe preliminary notice : — " Words by the idiotic poet; Pictures by the insane artist; and yells of laughter .by the hilarious Hauliau." Auckland Whaling Company. — The barque Albion has been fitted out at Auckland, and was to proceed to sea this week on a twelvemonths' cruise. It is the intention of the Company to purchase and fit out fresh ships as opportunities may occur, making Auckland the depot of what it is hoped will prove a profitable undertaking. The Education Question is at present occupying public attention.' We notice that the Catholics of Greymouth are invited to hold a meeting this evening at tbe parish school -bouse, for the purpose of drawing up a petition to the Assembly in favor-* of a denominational--' system, of education. Taranaki News.—" Lochls 1 " must be scarce iv 'JLVanaki if we may judge by the "following, paragraph iu;a late number of the Herald : — A horse ran away, yesterday, "iud a doctorran ? and-a coroner nm, and a. reporter ran also. /The horse fell, tbe rider was unhurt, -the-dpctor had no case, the eorouer uo fee, the reporter had this paragraph, and that was all that came of the runaway. , ' Wanganui Growing Wiser. — The way to wisdom in Wanganui 'is certainly a thorny one to travel if ,we are to believe what the Chronicle' tells us. It says : — Wanganui used to be a well-to-do and well-doing place, end many of its inhabitants are so srill. but for some time bark a change has been corning over portions of the community. ~ We would ra.ber not say it, but truih compels the avowal. And it gops pn. Facilis decensus. One hardiv knows who to put faith io, and you d.-dly meet people lifting up their hands and saying, " Who would have thought it ? " Well, we might have thought -it, if we had exercised ordinary discernment, aod drawn some distinction between the industrious frugal trader and the swellish speculator who would be fine at any cost. We are in hopes that ultimately good will come of this clearing of the commercial atmosphere. We dare not say that we have yet seen. the end of the storm, and it is very hard upon those who are striving lo do well to find their bard-earned money swept from them by speculators, but when the clouds do pass away, there will be a more'sererie state of society, and we shall be wiser even if we are sadder aud poorer men.
