"Wellington, 12.30 p.m. Mr. Williamson's election has been declared void, and a new writ is issued. Mr. O'Eorke is elected Chairman of Committees. Mr. Pearce moved the address in reply in an excellent speech, and Mr. Richardson of Canterbury seconded it. The mover intimated the three leading principles of the proposed Education Bill to be : — A thorough system of inspection; providing for districts where no means of education existed at present; and compelling parents to take advantage of the facilities afforded. Mr. Stafford, in a very mild speech, commented on a few trifling omissions in the speech, and spoke rather despondingly of the present prospects of the colony. He promised to cordially assist the Government in any plan for settliDg population on the land. Mr. Fox acknowledged Mr. Stafford's conciliatory tone. Mr. Gillies warmly attacked the native policy of the Government, declaring that it was nursing a war. > Mr. Gisborne characterised Mr, Gillies' speech as querulous/ and in marked contrast to that of Mr. Stafford. Mr. Maclean, of Waikouaiti, made a strong attack on Mr. Vogel's financial mission, and called upon the Government to strengthen their position by asking the assistance of Middle Island members, in whom the country had confidence, as likely to keep Mr. Vogel's theories in check. Mr. Bunny defended, and Mr. Shephard of the Dunstan opposed the Government. The address was agreed to. r
