Winter Evening Lectures. — The fifth lecture of the series was given last night by Dr. Irvine, J. Shephard, Esq., in the chair. The subject, " Respiration in Plants and Animals," in itself a most interesting one, was rendered doubly so by the very clear aud masterly manner in which it was treated by the doctor. His explanations were rendered easily in- | telligible by a number of diagrams, and chemical experiments with which he illustrated his subject. The lecture was a most interesting one, and at its close, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Dr. Irvine. News about Ourselves. — It will be remembered that some few months ago the Rangitoto grounded near the Picton wharf but was shortly got off again without sustaining any material injury. Tlfis is how the accident was reported in a Scotch paper culled the People's Journal: — "The steamship Rangelite, having on board the Suez mail, foundered in the neighborhood of Pictourou on the 27th February, but tho crew and passengers are understood to have been saved." The wiiter of the above paragraph displayed a . large amount of generosity and self-denial in allowing the crew and passengers to he saved; it would have been far more^ensational to have drowned them all. ' , TnE Rev. T. L. Tudor.— We (Press) } regret to learn that the Church Officers' have received official notice of the Rev. T. L. Tudor's' resignation of his cuie. The rev. gentleman was the first incumbent of this parish, aud for about eight years has held both it and the attached missionary district, and carried od regular ministrations to the natives iv it. During his iucumbency two new churches have been built — one at Havelock, and one near the Saw Mill, Picton Road, and funds and timber for a third, which ia to be erected at the Wakamarina, are ouly awaiting fine weather* "slf that it is highly probable that the rev. gentleman may see it completed, as he has informed the parish authorities of his intention to remahi until a successor is appointed.
