WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.

v Monday, July 3, 1871. The Board met at the Richmond Instistute. All the members present. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. The Secretary reported that along with Mr. Hill and the Overseer the road by Mi*. Hill's land had been visited, when Mr. Hill proposed ; to. convey a road 50 feet wide inside of the gorse fence near the river, provided such road be substantially fenced and the unstopped portion of the road, 15 chains long given up. In the event of the stopped-up road being taken he would expect £150 as compensation. Consideration deferred to next meeting. The Overseer, having reported that Mr. G. Tomlinson had made a commetioement of the sloping of banks agreed upon, of which howeve^ only a 3mall portion has been done, was Vdirected to get Mr. Tomlinson to put in the wooden pipes proposed by him. The Secretary reported serving a notice on Mr. Harkness about the removal of stuff laid on the roadside, on which the Overseer reported that he had had the stuff carted away free of cost. The report on the Port Road, Stoke, was read from the Overseer and Secretary, which stated that on taking levels they found it would be requisite to lower the ditch at Mr. Stafford's corner at least three feet to drain the swampy part in the way proposed by Mr. Green, and therefore they recommended .that the present drain through Mr. Green's land be kept open, it being absolutely necessary for the drainage of his land as well as the road. They also reported that it would cosfc£3o to make a ditch and a wooden pipe, as outlet on the beach, to lead the drainage from the other watercourse complained of by Mr. Green. ... ItVvas resolved that the members of the Board should visit the locality at some convenient opportunity. The Overseer reported that the masonry of the culvert near Greig's hill had not been done in a satisfactory manner, the mortar being deficient in lime, and not a sufficiency used. Ifc was resolved that payment be withheld until the work was properly, done. In reference to Messrs. Gibbs' application, the Board -was informed that the applicants declined having a special rate levied, preferring that the Board should repair the portion of road near the Wakefield Church as its contribution, an(l they would do the rest. ' The Surveyor reported that the clearing of stumps off the road iv Pigeon Valley was let by tender to J. Taylor, for £5 10s. Tenders ' were received for getting shingle from the Waimea Islands, when it was decided that none be. accepted at present, but that, previous to the next meeting, an examination be made of various localities with the view of getting better material than has hitherto been delivered ; also, that the Secretary should assert am. whether shingle can be taken from the Boulder Bank. The Secretary reported having applied to Government, as ordered, for payment of, money on account of rates, but that no reply has come to hand. It was resolved that the next meeting be held at the Bridge Hotel on Tuesday August I. ' '..".■ ' '■ The folio wing letters .were read : — From Mr. G. public inspection. A warrant was signed I by three members for £451 lis. 9d. The meeting of .ratepayers called by j advertisement took place in the Institution at Richmond the same day, Mr. R, Chattock in the chair, who, after reading the advertisement, called on the ratepayers present to propose candidates. Messrs. Win, Barnicoat, Baigent, and J. Mercer were proposed. The show of hands being in favor of the first three, and no poll being demanded for the fourth, Messrs. Barnicoat, Win, and Baigent were declared the successful candidates. Messrs. Chattock, R. M. Smith, J. T. Smith,. C. P. Kearns, and J. Mackay were proposed as auditors. The meeting having decided that three should be elected, the show of hands was in favor of Messrs. Chattock, R. M. Smith, and J. T. Smith. It was also carried that each auditor be paid £2 2s. for his services, and that each member of the Board receive 10s. for every day he shall attend at the Board.
