Service on Board thio " Beth Sha.n. " It will be seen by advertisement that divine service is to be held on board the Beth Shan again to-morrow afternoon. In the evening; Captain Peek will preach in the Wesleyan Church. Star Minstrels. — This local company of Christy Minstrels is making great preparations for the performance on Wednesday eveniug which promises to be one of (he best it has yet given. Holders of tickets for reserved seats are iriformed that the entrance will be at Ihe side door. The "Taeanaki." — This steamer, which arrived at Picton from Wellington at noon, to-day, will leave the former port for Nelson at 4 o'clock to-morrow morning, aud arrive here about mid-day. She is advertised to sail for Taranaki aud Manukau with the Euglish mail on Monday. Telegraphic. — We have received a telegram dated Napier, July 7, which professes to contain important intelligence but is so obscurely worded that we are compelled to give it just as it reached us : — "Important intelligence. Locke Taupo attended meeting of natives in favor of opening road. Large meeting. Locke proceeds to Cambridge, and thence to Auckland." It is rumoured that flax has risen £2 per ton during the last week in consequence of the large demand for flagellator? for the winter nuisances, " whip tops." — Advertiser. Several American papers now a-days, in addition to their ordinary §tafX of reporters, have a special function^ryXcalled the "Interviewer," whose vocatwn is " cornering" public men. As AN example of the grea^t value of artiGcial grasses, a well-known Victorian grazier assures the Goulburn Herald that last shearing he sheared no less than 27,000^ sheep from 3000 acres of land, and having now some 2000 additional acres, he expects to shear no less than 50,000. What are , t we coming to? What n)|xt, we wonder ? A London Correspondent of the Melbourne Age writes oja 20th April : — During the month the 'arrivals of. Australian meat have been very heavy, amounting to 18,262 cases. The market is at present much depressed, .this being the time of the year when meat is cheap. Several of the parochial unions have, however, determined to commence using it, the trials made under the instruction and supervision of Mr. D. Tallerman having been pronounced satisfactory. The following motion was to be dis- t cussed in the Ofcsigo Provincial Council: — " 1. In the opinion of this Council the time has arrived when Provincial institutions should be divested of many of the existing expensive surroundings. 2. As a step towards retrenchment in that direction all necessary means ; should be taken to obtain such alteration in the Constitution Act as will abolish the present- system, and establish one more in conformity, with the exigencies .of the' times. 3.
