From the following report, clipped from the Lyttelton Times of the 24th, it will be feen that the mate of the vessel, George Major, was washed overboard and drowned during a heavy gale : — " The Flirt left Mercury Bay on Saturday night, 13th May. with a light N'W. wind. On the 17th the wind hauled to the W.N.W., blowing fresh; in latitude 41 deg. 25 mm. on the 18th the wind hauled again to the S.W. ; at 5p m put the vessel under close-reefed fore-and-aft canvas; wore ship and headed in W. by N. to W.N.W., blowing a heavy gale. On Friday, the I,9th, at 2.45 a.m., a very s&\ accident occurred. Thp vessel shipped a very" he*t?ry sea aft on the poo-fl, and washed George Major, the mate, overboard, and smashed in the cabin skylights, half filling' the cabin with water. A very heavy sea running at the time, and it blowing a gale of wind, nothing could be done to save him. At 9 a.m. had moderate wind from N.W.; stood on her course at noon, when the wind again went into the S.W.; and blew a furious gale; hove the vessel to with main stay-sail for 24 hours, when it moderated, and the wind hauled to the W.N. W. on Sunday, the 21st,. at 6 am.; at 11 a.m. made all sail, steering S.W , with clear weather; at midnight made Lyttelton. "
