The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JUNE, 1, 1871.

"Gasworks for Nelson."— ln Mr. Tutton's letter, published under this heading yesterday, an error occurred in theNigures. Coirected, it reads as follows: — Income from coke, "^ j tar, &c ] &3_ \° °/ 3549 thousand cubic > "■■ V-'o^oa n n feet of i> as at 6/6 - > 242 * 3 . ° ° per 1000 1153 8 6\ Leaving a deficiency 11 6; Small Pox. — It will- be seen by our Australian telegrams that the ship Somerseishire which bad arrivad at Melbourne after a splendid passage of 55 days, was placed in quarantine on account of having the small pox on board. It is fo be hoped that this horrible disease will not be introduced into Australia, both for the sake of the colonists there, and on our own account, as, with the frequent communication between Melbourne and the various ports of the Southern Island of New Zealand, we could not expect to enjoy immunity from its ravages. The Rai Valley. — In his opening ad_ress to the Provincial Council, the Superintendent of Marlborough said : — "Your Government have thought it desirable to take steps to open the Rai Valley for sale. The many enquiries which have been made by persons desirous of purchasing lands there ; and the Nelson Government have expressed their willingness to co-operate wiih us in obtaining a more level live of- road between the Provinces, induced us to commence the survey with as little delay as possible. I have been myself at some pains to acquire some personal knowledge of the probable line of road, and of the valley itself, and am satisfied that the steps taken will prove advantageous." We observe that the Superintendent of Otago — no doubt expressing the opinion of the Provincial Government — lias officially replied to a question from the G-olJfields Commission now sitting at Dunedin on the subject of water supplyas folloyvs : — " With regard to the latter, perhaps I may be permitted to observe that I am disposed to think, that the most economical, practical, and speedy mode in which the limited amount obtainable by this Province can be applipd, is by ad vancing money on loan, at not exceeding five per cent, interest, to companies already in existence, or which may be formed hereafter — the Government to advance the money on such > terms as shall recoup itself, and as shall provide for tlie supply of water at the lowest possible rates."
